Emily Sokolow
I am a classically trained oil painter and writer from New York, now based in Topanga Canyon. I explore how we make meaning from both extraordinary events and ordinary moments. My work explores painting as a way of processing personal and collective experience and the relationship between rupture and resilience.
Through portraits, landscapes, and symbolic still lifes, I use painting to slow down moments that are often too beautiful, too unsettling, or too overwhelming to fully digest as they unfold. The act of painting helps me metabolize these experiences. Some of my work emerged from periods of profound uncertainty, including the pandemic in New York, years spent living in Israel and returning just before October 7, 2023, and the 2025 Palisades Fire. Other works are rooted in quieter observations of the people and places that have shaped my life, including portraits of local artists and snapshots of the canyon in which we live.
Alongside my studio practice, I work in strategic communications, helping organizations navigate complexity through narrative. Across both practices, I am interested in how stories - both visual and verbal - help us understand ourselves, the world around us, and the relationship between the two.
